Promoting & Advocating for Pharmacy Compounding across Africa.
- Committed to raising awareness & supporting patients’ access to reliable and safe customized medications.
If millions of Africans still consult with the unorthodox traditional herbalists, who mix extemporaneous concoctions to alleviate their ailments, then there is a huge opportunity for evidence-based pharmacy compounding in the continent.
If medications made in factories cannot meet everyone’s pharmaceutical needs, then there is a future for customized medicine for millions of patients.
It is the creation of a customized medication, most often from raw ingredients by a licensed pharmacist pursuant to a prescription to meet the unique needs of an individual patient, when a commercially available drug does not meet those needs.
The pharmacists’ right and ability to compound medications are authorized by federal laws in all African jurisdictions.
Working with a prescriber, a compounding pharmacist in the community or hospital can prepare customized medications to meet the individual needs of children, adults, and animals:
When a patient may not be able to tolerate the commercially available drug due to certain dyes, preservatives, or binders.
When the exact dosage strengths or delivery forms needed are not commercially available.
When the patient cannot ingest the medication in its commercially available form.
When medications require flavoring agents to make them more palatable for children and pets.
When a pharmacist can combine several medications to increase adherence.
When required manufactured drugs are in shortage, unavailable for pharmaceutical companies or has been discontinued by the manufacturer.
